Saline Hysterography

How is the Test Performed?

A saline infusion sonogram (SIS) is a special type of sonogram. During this procedure, your physician will place a thin catheter into the uterine cavity and insert a small amount of normal saline fluid into the uterine cavity. This allows the physician to see the inner cavity of the uterus in greater details. Submucosal fibroids and endometrial polyps are better visualized using this technique. The endometrial thickness or endometrial lining is also seen in greater detail.

  • This test is used to diagnose causes for abnormal vaginal bleeding in premenopausal and postmenopausal patients.
  • It also can be used to diagnose some forms of abnormal uterine shapes such as bicornuate uterus.

What could I expect after the procedure?

The procedure causes some mild cramping but usually takes only 5-10 minutes to perform.
